How to use Sub-Site
What is Sub-Site?
Sub-Site is a privacy-first subscription tracker that runs entirely in your browser. No account is needed — your data is never sent to any server.
Your data lives in your browser
All subscriptions are stored in your browser's local storage. This means:
- Data is private and stays on your device.
- Data will be lost if you clear your browser history/cache.
- Data does not follow you to other browsers or devices automatically.

About alternatives & suggestions
How suggestions work
Sub-Site compares your active subscriptions against a list of well-known services. When a match is found, it suggests a cheaper or free alternative.
- Matched suggestions — specific alternatives for services you subscribe to (e.g. Netflix → Amazon Prime Video).
- Category suggestions — general tips for subscription categories where no exact match was found.
Affiliate links
Some links may be affiliate links. Sub-Site may earn a small commission if you sign up via a link — at no extra cost to you. This helps keep the site free.
Tips for saving money
- Consider switching annual billing to save up to 20% on many services.
- Check whether family or group plans are available — they often halve the cost per person.
- Pause rather than cancel services you use seasonally.

Backup & Restore
Save a backup, export a spreadsheet, or restore from a previous backup. Your files never leave your device.
How to back up and restore your data
Why you need to export
Sub-Site stores your data in your browser's local storage. Your data will be permanently lost if you:
- Clear your browser history, cache, or site data.
- Use a different browser or a different device.
- Reinstall your browser or operating system.
Exporting JSON (full backup)
Click Export JSON to download a complete backup of all your subscriptions and settings. This file can be imported back into Sub-Site at any time.
Exporting CSV (spreadsheet)
Click Export CSV to download your subscriptions as a spreadsheet. Open it in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets for custom analysis. Note: CSV files cannot be imported back into Sub-Site — use JSON for backups.
Importing a backup
- Choose Merge to add entries from the backup without overwriting your existing data, or Replace to start fresh from the backup.
- Click Choose backup file… and select your saved
.jsonfile. - A confirmation message will show how many subscriptions were imported.
Merge vs Replace
- Merge — keeps all your current subscriptions and adds any new ones from the backup file. Duplicates (same ID) are skipped.
- Replace — deletes everything currently saved and loads only the subscriptions from the backup file.

Settings explained
Default Currency
Sets the currency that is pre-selected when you add a new subscription. You can still choose a different currency for individual subscriptions. Available currencies: GBP, USD, EUR, CAD, AUD.
Note: if you have subscriptions in multiple currencies, the dashboard will display "Multiple currencies" instead of a single total to avoid misleading conversions.
Waste Alert Threshold
When your total annual subscription spend exceeds this amount (in your default currency), a warning banner appears on the Dashboard to prompt a review. Set it to 0 to disable the alert, or a higher value if you have a larger budget.
Danger Zone — Clear All Data
This permanently deletes all your subscriptions and settings. This action cannot be undone.
